Genie Voice - VOIP (Voice Over IP)

Communication with clients and business partners plays a major role in the business world. As a matter of fact, the bigger the business, the more important the relationships. Phone communication stands for a very important communication medium; however, high costs associated to classic telephony can often become a cause of distress. Alternative solutions, such as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) are meant to address such issues.

The voice of the caller is converted into data packets, sent via the Internet to the recipient, where it is reconverted into voice signal, and the answer back follows the same path. The conversion duration is unnoticeable, making it a real-time dialog.

VoIP telephony’s greatest benefit is the small price, as it uses an existing Internet connection. Moreover, Genie Voice is delivered with customizations for business communication, being the optimal solution for multinationals and outsourcing companies.

VoIP can solve issues which otherwise handled by traditional telephony translate into significant costs, such as easy access – possible anywhere in the world, via the Internet connection, with no additional costs.

More exactly, calls can be routed automatically to your VoIP phone, available anywhere you have Internet access. Once connected, you can call and receive calls on your regular phone number, thus allowing you to move your telephone post anywhere in the world, and you only have to pay for the Internet connection.

Moreover, VoIP packets include services that are either not available in classic telephony, or are taxed more: conference, call forwarding, automatic redialing, call waiting, caller ID. Technological evolutions also bring in significant contributions to developing top services – video telephony, teleconference.

The Asterisk software implements an office operator (PBX) which enables a certain number of phones to engage in calls between them and with the exterior (including PSTN). The solution includes software used for features that that were previously available only in costly commercial phone operators: voice mail, conference call, vocal interactive response (with phone menus), automatic call distribution. Moreover, users can create new functions by writing new scripts for the numerotation plan in the own language defined by Asterisk, by adding new personal modules developed in C or by writing the Asterisk gateway interface scripts in Perl or other programming languages.

VoIP solutions based on the Asterisk technology are of the same nature as the high-end solutions provided by traditional great telecom operators, however at half the costs. In addition, scalability and its adaptation capabilities are only few of the strong points of this technology.

As a solution with a powerful software engine, the application is virtually limitless, and the competent team of developers behind it are constantly providing it with new features. Moreover, every implementation of the solution can be personalized using the own Asterisk language.

Available facilities include teleconference, call waiting and IVR – “the digital secretary”: clients can be directed to the desired dial extension by selecting one of the various offers, of the type “For marketing department, press 1” or by dialing an extension from the company’s phone directory. Calls can be monitored, outgoing calls can be available in real time, and they can also be recorded automatically or random, for pre-established extensions.

There is also the option of waiting calls – a user is waiting on the phone until a certain extension in a certain group becomes available –, as well as that of routing the call to user groups: if a dial tone is not available, the call is automatically redirected to one or several extensions or even a phone outside the network, such as a mobile. Moreover, redirection – the “passing” of a call among call extensions – can be carried out whenever necessary.

As far as voice mail is concerned, one can opt out for consulting messages manually or for sending them via e-mail. Moreover, the operator can be programmed to take into account time differences: different working hours for different meridians, with automatic messages such as “Our working hours are between 9 am and 18 pm. Please come back during this interval or leave a message after the beep”.

Fax calls can be made using the fax <-> e-mail interface or even regular fax machines, using a cost-effective adaptor. In fact, hardware solutions enable the use of regular telecom equipment together with VoIP solution features: a number of dial extensions managed by the VoIP system can be changed into regular office phone lines.

A dialing extension requires:

  • a VoIP telephone – looks like a regular phone set, but includes several additional features and is connected to the company’s ethernet network;

  • a software telephone – an application installed on a computer in the network and is used in combination with simple equipment: headphones + microphone;

  • a regular phone – using an adaptor;

  • a fax – using an adaptor.

Genie Voice can be integrated into several scalable solutions, such as Outlook or MSN: after previous configuration, a contact in the Outlook address book can be instantly called. As an open platform, it can be easily integrated with other software solutions.

Asterisk’s main characteristic is the support for several VoIP protocols: SIP, H.323, MGCP. Thus, Asterisk can work with most SIP phones, behaving both as server registrar and gateway between IP phones and the PSTN network. The solution developers designed a new protocol, the IAX, which is efficient in transporting calls between two or more Asterisk operators.

Since both traditional and VoIP calling services are supported, Asterisk enables users to improve their phone communication and to benefit from new technologies. Asterisk servers can also be used to replace older PBX, enabling them to benefit from new functions (such as voice mails or phone menus) or to cut down on costs by using Internet-based telephony.
